COUNTY trainers have enjoyed several wins this month – both on the flat and over the jumps.
Pandy-based David Evans sent out four winners on the flat at Wolverhampton, Southwell, Chelmsford and Nottingham.
On the Wolverhampton all-weather track, 6/1 shot Top of Pleinmont scooped the Franklin Hodge £3,245 first prize under jockey Pat Cosgrove, taking the lead in the 1m 4f race a furlong out to come home 1 3/4L clear of Irish horse Prince Hector.
At Southwell over five furlongs, Cosgrove was in the saddle again riding 16/1 shot Forest Gunner to a 1 1/4L win in the Download The At The Races App Handicap from 5/1 shot Masterclass, bursting through late on to again take the top purse of £3,245.
Two days later at Chelmsford in the Timeform Sprint Series Qualifier Handicap over 5f, it was the turn of Neil Calton to ride an Evans horse to victory, with Level Up winning by a heart-stopping nose.
The Irish 11/2 mount made all the running until challenged in the last 100 yards by 5/2 favourite Cabeza de Llave, but just held on to take the £3,663 first prize.
And Evans was back in the winners' enclosure again last Wednesday at Nottingham, as Jack Callan rode the 100/30 favourite Dovey Moon to a 2 1/4L win in the 1m 1/2f Close Brothers Motor Finance Handicap, scooping a £4,448 pay day in the process.
Shirenewton’s Grace Harris also celebrated a winner over the jumps last Thursday at Ffos Las, as 7/2 shot Baikal took the lead approaching the last under jockey Joe Anderson in the Faucets Handicap Hurdle over two miles, before racing home 2 1/4L clear of Turpin Gold to land the £4.066 first prize.
