ELEVEN hardy Harriers turned out for the notoriously brutal Blorenge fell race near Abergavenny on Saturday 29th November.
This was the penultimate race in the Chepstow Harriers' 2014 fell series.
The fell race is only 2.5 miles long, but packs a 1,400ft
punch of steep ascent and descent. The runners used the hands-on-knees technique to ascend the steep climb to the top of the Blorenge.
They emerged to a very misty summit, barely able to see their fellow competitors, and enjoyed a very brief respite of 250 metres on a pleasant plateau before plunging steeply down through slippery grass, bracken, a stony path, and a dark, narrow tunnel to the bottom.
The race was no respecter of road speed. It was all about technique and skill on the descent in order to gain places and get a good time.
Many of those who reached the top first, were overtaken on the descent by the fearless and skilful.
Paul Murrin was second overall, with team-mate Matt Stott in third place. Joc Dodd won her over 60 age category.
Other Harriers competing were Andy and Gill Stott, Paul Dodd, Karen Elvers, Andy Creber, Vanessa Lawson, Niki Morgan and Gareth Jones.
After the exertions of the race, the organisers laid on free sandwiches, mince pies and tea for all who took part.
The final race in the Chepstow Harriers' fell series is the Skirrid race on Saturday 20th December.
