Coleg Gwent student Amy Hill is in the running for a spot on the British cycling team at the indoor track cycling Pre-World Championships in Glasgow.
If successful, 17-year-old Amy from Newport will represent Great Britain on the elite team for the upcoming Pre-World Championships in August and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year.
As part of the selection process, Amy has to demonstrate her talent as an individual cyclist and as a member of the team by keeping-up with a qualifying time.
Amy, who has been cycling for eight years, turned professional at the beginning of the year and has since gone on to compete in a number of competitions, including the Junior World Cup in January, where she earned third place, and also the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Championships in March.
Amy said: "I am feeling quite nervous because there are six girls, including myself, fighting for only four spots.
"I have to wait until after 12th July to find out if I have made the selections. If I was to be selected, it would be amazing for my career."
Amy is currently studying the BTEC Sport Development course at Coleg Gwent's Usk Campus and hopes to start her Foundation Degree in Community Sport Development in September, a course that she says will give her the flexibility to continue to train as an elite athlete.
Leon Annett, curriculum leader for sport at Coleg Gwent, is extremely proud of how well Amy has done this year.
He said: "Amy has successfully managed to combine a full-time course around a very strict training regime.
"Her self-motivation has been inspirational and it has been a privilege to have her studying with us. I wish her all the best as she trains for the elite team and am confident that we shall see her representing Great Britain at the Olympics very soon."
