After a few weeks of competing at more low key and local meetings, Monmouth sprinter Ryan Lee represented South East Wales in the 'Aviva Welsh Schools track and field championships 2012' at Brecon on Saturday 7th July, which consisted of eight teams from all over Wales.

There was immense pressure on all of the athletes as the first placed in each event would automatically be chosen to compete in the UK Schools International Athletics Board championships (SIAB), which this year will be held at Ashford in Kent on 21st and 22nd July.

This event host track and field competitions for the elite junior athletes from the UK and Ireland.

In the final of the 200 metres, Ryan was under great pressure as some of the athletes had already beaten him this season.

It was a fantastic race and Ryan took first spot by pushing hard on the last 20 metres.

This gave Ryan his place in the SIAB team, which he has been training really hard for over the past month.

A relaxed Ryan took second place in the 100m heat and in another brilliant final, Ryan finished second, only three hundredths of a second behind the winner.

The South East relay squad had a great third place with Ryan running a very fast fourth leg.

Ryan left the event with one gold, a silver and a bronze medal.

All in all, it was a really successful day and to make the Welsh Team at SIAB was the icing on the cake.

This Saturday (14th July), Ryan competes in the Welsh Inter-Regional Championships at Cardiff.

On Wednesday 18th July, there is a Pre-Olympic warm up meeting at Cardiff, for many athletes and will showcase the best of Olympic and Welsh talent just 10 days before the start of the 2012 games.

Teams from USA, Trinidad & Tobago, New Zealand, Greece, Italy, Kenya, Morocco, South Africa, Denmark, Sweden, Nigeria and many more have already shown an interest in competing.

This meeting will also include an U20 international pre-meeting so for some of our local athletes this will be a great chance to compete with athletes from overseas.

This meeting is from 6.30pm to 9.30pm.

Ryan has been selected to compete in the U20 men's 100m, so will also be at this event.

In August, Ryan will be competing in Bedford, Aberdeen, plus in all of his local events.
