CHEPSTOW Town finished their league season in second after a final 1-1 draw with Ardal South East play-off rivals Goytre, reports STUART TOWNSEND.
But that means a wait to see if they stay there and qualify for the play-offs, as the Penperlleni outfit can overhaul them if they win their last two games away to bottom-four sides Abercarn and Tredegar.
Goytre stole a march on the Jockeys beating them 2-1 at home in midweek before Saturday’s return match draw.
In the midweek match, Chepstow's Josh Parsons had a chance to open the scoring on 22 minutes firing low across goal, before Adam Wakley’s shot was deflected for a corner.
But the hosts broke the deadlock after 31 minutes when Lewis Green ran on to a through ball and fired past keeper Matthew Swann.
And Goytre doubled their advantage within four minutes when defender Daniel Paul headed home a Connor Handford corner at the far post.
Chepstow nearly hit back when Parsons ran on to a through ball but saw his effort saved, before Green narrowly volleyed over from an Alfie Young cross at the other end.
The Jockeys then went close twice – Fin Maguire-Hamblett firing wide following a swift break and Parsons with a low shot.
But Goytre nearly added a third in first-half stoppage-time, Green's drive turned over by Matthew Swann.
Five minutes into the second period, Chepstow’s Mallaachi Graham pounced on a defensive mistake but fired wide before Goytre's Daniel Barnard headed over from a 58th-minute corner.
A close-range effort from Wakley was next blocked on the hosts' line, but Chepstow finally pegged one back as he converted Christian O'Donnell's low cross from close-range with 10 minutes.
But the hosts held on to peg three points back on Chepstow, before the two met again four days later.
A Jockeys win would have sealed second, but it ended 1-1, Barnard giving Goytre the lead right on half-time before Lewis hit back with a 77th-minute leveller.
