Gwent County League Amateur Cup - Rhymney 1 Sudbrook CC 3

SUDBROOK CC hit back at doubters this Saturday (10th September) to earn a place in the quarter-final draw with the home side literally paying the penalty for poor discipline.

The visitors were caught napping at a corner and went 1-0 down after 10 minutes, but when Keenan Perrett was brought down and a penalty awarded, Steve Wilson stepped up to equalise.

Sudbrook went ahead, again from the spot, when David Sinden was manhandled at a corner, Wilson eagerly accepting the early Christmas gift.

With half time approaching, Ben Miles and Tom Turner linked up before Turner put Sinden in to make it 3-1.

Sudbrook boss Daryl Cann said he was pleased that his players had reacted differently to going behind.

“In previous weeks, we got on each other’s backs and became frustrated but we kept our heads this time,” he said later.

“The second half looked a struggle for both teams with the pitch resembling a cow field.

“It’s hard to play football on that sort of pitch. Players from both teams were slipping and sliding around.

“Rhymney tried to push for goals but came to nothing while we had a couple of good chances but couldn’t find the net.

“All in all, it was an excellent performance from every player today in tough conditions.

“Horrendous pitches do effect the standard of football that can be played but we showed we can get stuck in and battle hard when needed.”

Wattsville ended Mathern’s interest in this year’s cup competition with a 6-4 victory.

Billy Jeffery, Mark Organ (2) and a Matty Board penalty were Mathern’s scorers.
