THREE goals in extra time sealed victory in this all-East Gwent Senior League tie and another local derby in the second round.
Tintern Abbey lived dangerously though and had a customary Geraint Reynolds strike, a first senior goal for 16-year-old Harry Hoskins and an own goal to thank for the chance of another 30 minutes to beat a spirited effort by the visitors.
They also lost their regular goalkeeper, the colourful Colin Jones aka ‘Bear’, who was injured when diving to prevent a goal and was forced to limp off.
Reynolds opened the scoring, galloping after a through ball to beat Aynsley Jones in the visitors’ goal.
But the lead was short-lived as Paul Fieldsend levelled the scores from the penalty spot.
Bradleigh Scawthorn gave the visitors the lead but young Hoskins headed in via the bar to get his first goal at senior level before Tintern lost their keeper and replaced him with defender Sam Gluning.
The goal of the game, scored by Steve Monday to restore Portskewett’s lead, came after a Tintern attack broke down.
The ball was cleared to Monday who was just inside his own half. He controlled the ball, looked up and then hit a glorious shot that swerved and dipped just inside Gluning’s right hand post.
With only minutes to go, Tintern might have crumbled but they continued to press forward and equalised in the cruellest fashion when an attempted clearance under pressure skidded past the luckless keeper.
The final whistle brought 30 minutes of extra time and, spurred on by skipper Pip Seabury, Tintern knew their opponents, who had arrived with just 11 players, would be tiring.
They took the lead when Geraint Reynolds ran onto a free kick by his brother Darryl before lashing the ball past Jones and in the second half, playing up the slope he added two more before the impressive Scawthorn reduced the arrears with the final kick of the match.
