FORMER Monmouth Comprehensive student Millie Malsom scooped two awards at the Ross Juniors FC Women's end of season presentation night.

The team of teenagers, except one over-19 player, finished a very respectable third in their first season in Tier 7, playing in the Mid West Counties League.

They also reached the quarter-final of the County Cup and made history as the first ever team to represent the club in the women’s Adobe FA Cup, when they hosted Royal Wooton Bassett Ladies.

Although the result didn't go their way, it was a fantastic occasion at the Sports Ground, with the game attracting more than 200 spectators.

Hotshot Millie shared the Coach's Player of the Year award with team mate Macy Walker and also picked up the Top Scorer honour.

By far the youngest team in the league and with the smallest squad, Juniors Women used only 18 players all season, and finished with a very respectable 18 wins, five draws and five losses.

A club spokesperson said: "We started the season with six 16-year-olds and four 17-year-olds in our squad, and they’ve all proved if you're good enough, you're old enough."

Manager Carl Roberts added: "We look forward to building on our excellent efforts and progress we made this season and are excited to welcome some new young players from our U16s to the squad.

"Lastly, we would like to recognise our sponsors, without whom these things wouldn’t be possible – 21Wellbeing, a fantastic local gym; HP Scaffolding Ltd, serving the local community and beyond; The Hope and Anchor, a fantastic pub on the lovely River Wye; and Pronto’s Pizza Kebab, a delicious kebab shop, who kindly provided food on the night.”

Pre-season training began on Wednesday, June 11, and anyone who would like to go along to the squad's sessions and see what they are about are welcome.
