East Gwent Senior League Division One

HONOURS were even in the match of the day as a last-minute goal by Sam Leighton rescued a point for Underwood SC A at home to Mathern Reserves A.

David Jackson equalised Dan Tyler’s early goal for Mathern and when Harry Johnstone restored the lead, it spurred Underwood on.

Both managers praised the commitment their players showed throughout, Mathern boss Lee Baker also praising the fitness levels of both teams.

“It was a cracking match to watch,” he said. “It was as open a match as you are likely to see in this league this season. The commitment and fitness shown by both sides was

outstanding.

“It may be two points dropped but credit to the “Wood”, they never gave up and kept knocking on the door. I believe it’s a massive point for us and I’m proud of what we have achieved in taking four points from such a good side.”

His opposite number Craig Johnson said he was proud of the way his team battled to the final whistle.

“The equaliser was their reward and the result leaves the table looking very interesting,” he said.

Mathern still head the table with 19 points from seven games, a point ahead of Severn Tunnel A and Thornwell Red & White A with Underwood a further two points behind.

Tunnel A beat Caldicot Town 6-2 while Thornwell beat visiting Caldicot Castle A 6-1.

“We played very well in the first half,” Thornwell manager Terry Woodward said.

“We were 4-0 up at half time and we did take our foot off the gas after the break.”

Tony Reynolds (2), Jordan Locke, Kenny Vidler, Ben Rees and Dean Corbett scored for Thornwell who entertain Mathern Reserves on Saturday.

Tintern Abbey won 6-2 at Chepstow Athletic with goals from Geraint Reynolds (2), Richard Morgans (2), Joe Whitehouse and Richard Stevens.
