THE Kingfishers crowned a cracking week of cup football with a late comeback on the pitch against higher-ranked opponents, followed by penalty shootout victory.

Having beaten Brynmawr United 2-0 away in the Gwent Premier League Cup in midweek, and still having to play their games away until the end of the cricket season, Monmouth Town headed for Ardal South East outfit Taffs Well in the FAW Cymru Welsh Cup second qualifying round on Saturday.

It looked like a mountain to climb when the Wellmen went 2-0 up early on thanks to 16th and 27th minute goals.

And entering the last 10 minutes with no further score, it looked like the Cardiff hosts would be the ones in the hat for the next round draw, before up popped the returning Ollie Moss to give Town a lifeline, striking home after a corner rebounded to him on the edge of the box.

The Wellmen responded though within three minutes to make it 3-1, and surely that was that.

But with the game now end-to-end, never-say-die Monmouth pushed back within two minutes when a shot from Dan MacDonald was spilled by the keeper and Callum Uttley was on hand to tap it in.

And in the last minute of normal time, the Kingfishers secured a free-kick outside the box, and MacDonald found Mitchell Palmer at the back post to fire in for 3-3.

The jubilant Kingfishers barely had time to draw breath before the final whistle and a penalty shootout.

Jac Simpson put the hosts in front matched cooly by Macdonald, before Lee Price and Monmouth's Robbie Atkinson both converted for 2-2.

With Sam Balla and then the visitors' Palmer also then succeeding, the tension was mounting at 3-3.

But it was the Wellmen who wobbled, Ethan Deacon missing their next kick to hand the Kingfishers the advantage.

Lamin Ndure gratefully accepted the opportunity to fire Monmouth 4-3 in front.

And there was no need for a final spot kick as Kingfishers keeper Jack Harris produced a fine save to deny Charlie Hansen-Taylor and put them through to the next round of the world’s third oldest national cup competition, after the FA Cup and the Scottish Cup.

That followed a hard-earned 2-0 Gwent League Cup win at Brynmawr United's Welfare Ground, one of the highest pitches in Wales, thanks to an Ndure strike on 35 minutes and a second from Uttley on 81 minutes, both set up by Rob Laurie.

Also through in the Welsh Cup are Chepstow Town after a 4-0 home win over Neath and District League outfit Bryncoch, with the goals coming from Iestyn Davies (52), Adam Wakley (59), and Olly Melling (67/75).

Usk Town also went through in the Gwent Premier Cup in midweek, 3-2 at home to Cwmcarn Athletic, Louis Quinton (7) and Sam Vaughan (10) giving them a flying start before Ryan Hancock scored a third for a 3-1 lead in first half injury time.

Chepstow’sThornwell R&W led from the 37th minute after a Toby Prettyjohn strike away to Ponthir, but missed out 2-1 to two goals in the last 10 minutes, the winner coming two minutes from normal time.

Meanwhile, Monmouth Town 2nds continued their pre-season preparations with a narrow 3-2 loss away to Broadwell 2nds, with the goals coming from Cameron Thornton and Harry Williams.
