MATHERN Reserves B won 7-1 at Underwood SC B in a match that saw Kyle Gettings score twice against his old club.

Mathern boss Jeff Whitehouse was happy with his team’s performance – including young Sam Thomas’ two goals.

“We knew this was going to be a tough first game of the season but I felt we could come away with a result,” Whitehouse said.

“We have a great mix of youth and experience in our team with my Man of the Match Harry Ward working all over the pitch and scoring three goals.

“Our midfield ran the game and although I’m a little disappointed not to keep a clean sheet, I’m very pleased with the attitude of all 14 players

“This was a great start to the season and we must keep this going.”

Mathern coach Dean Thomas, who is taking a year off coaching the GCL team, said the mix of youth and experience left Underwood shell-shocked at half time.

“They were 4-0 down, Stu Mackie was bossing the midfield with Tom Collins and Jimmy Burchill working tirelessly alongside him,

“Goalkeeper Ray Buck looked solid behind an outstanding back four and the front line was on fire.”

Portskewett and Sudbrook won 9-1 at Severn Tunnel C and Thornwell Red & White B beat Severn Tunnel B 3-0

Finally, Chepstow Town’s match was called off because their opponents, Sudbrook CC, were unable to field a team.
