County Cup Semi Final - RTB Ebbw Vale 5 Mathern FC 2
MATHERN failed to add a fifth trophy to a glittering season when they travelled to Ebbw Vale last Thursday.
Two early goals stunned the visitors and when a third goal was added midway through the first half following a defensive mix-up at a free-kick, defeat was on the cards.
Soon after Mark Organ reduced the deficit with a well taken goal, firing the ball home from the edge of the penalty area after a fine pass by Elliot Greening and Vale, who had been strolling around their home town’s 3G pitch with some authority, suddenly realised they had a match on their hands.
But two goals in the first five minutes of the second half sealed it and despite Greening’s 18th goal of the season, taking him alongside Luke Farley and Organ in the race for the first team’s Golden Boot award, Mathern’s season drew to a close with a defeat.
Mathern manager Colin Jeffery refused to be too disappointed by the result: “We’ve had a good run, beaten good teams on the way to the semi and Vale will be playing Division One football next season," he said. "Now we build for next season.”
