LAST season’s runners-up Underwood SC hammered Chepstow Athletic 11-2 to send out a message of intent to the rest of Division 1 on Saturday.
But Severn Tunnel outscored them, winning 12-0 at Caldicot Castle with Tom Atkins celebrating his birthday with a double hat-trick.
Tunnel’s other goals came from Daryl Berry, Matt Addis, Sam Barrett, Rhys Briscoe and Tom Pickin while Underwood’s hatful came via Josh Downing, Kyle Harrison, Mathew Seabourne, Taylor Gregory, Callum Ford and Jermaine Allen.
Underwood boss Craig Johnson was pleased to be leading the way.
“It was another good win after a disappointing first half,” he said.
“We conceded two soft goals and led 3-2 at half time, but my players stepped it up in the second half showing their real ability.”
Undy Athletic won 3-1 at Severn Bridge thanks to goals from Michael Waters and Jack Lloyd.
In division two, Sudbrook won 6-1 at Caldicot Castle in a match described by Sudbrook manager Gary Vaughan as “a good game played in the spirit of football.”
“We had a lot of young lads playing who are learning all the time,” he added.
Following the midweek cup defeat at Mathern, Vaughan said his team showed a lot of team spirit.
Sudbrook’s scorers were Zak Hitchens, Dougie Drummond, Richard Lee and Marc Bradley.
Chepstow Town won 4-1 at Portskewett and Sudbrook with goals from Matthew Earley and Chris Brown, Steve Lovell scoring the home side’s goal.
The match between Mathern Reserves B and Thornwell R&W B was abandoned following a violent incident that has been reported to the league.
