A CHEPSTOW darts ace is to compete in a darts ‘Champion of Champions’ event in front of thousands in Cardiff.
31-year-old Jon Worsley, is through to the finals of the Worthington’s 2016 Darts Champion of Champions event where he will compete against players from all over the country for a £5,000 top prize.
Jon, who turned professional only six months ago after winning a two year Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) tour card, earned his place in the finals, which are organised by Red Dragon Darts with the additional sponsorship of Molson Coors, by winning a qualifying event heat held at Sedbury British Legion club. Scoring well through the earlier rounds, Jon, who plays with the darts nickname of ‘Womble’, secured his place in the finals with a 2-0 win over team mate Mike Davies.
The Worthington Champion of Champions finals, which will take place in Cardiff at the end of August, will see 256 darts players – all winners of qualifying events held around the country – compete for a total prize fund of £17,500 in a best of three legs format which mirrors that of the iconic News of the World competition.
Jon, who plays for Sedbury British Legion in the Chepstow Darts League and for Rogiet Non-Pole in the Caldicot and Magor Darts League, is no stranger to top flights darts, having recently competed in the European Darts Matchplay in Hamburg. He has also qualified for the UK Open twice before.
“Winning my PDC tour card is my greatest darts achievement to date,” says Jon. “I can’t wait for the Champion of Champions finals in Cardiff. Playing in front of more than a thousand darts fans will be a tremendous experience.”
