One of Wales' most popular golf clubs has raised a staggering £3,000 to help those with hearing loss and tinnitus.

Action on Hearing Loss Cymru, (formally RNID), was selected as Lady Captain's 'Charity of the Year' by the ladies golf section of St Pierre Marriott Hotel & Country Club in Chepstow, with club members taking part in fundraising activities over the last year.

Outgoing Lady Captain Jenny Cook, chose to support Action on Hearing Loss Cymru as she herself suffers from hearing loss.

Jenny, who developed Acoustic Neuroma (benign tumor) 10 years ago, lost the hearing in one ear as a result and now wears a hearing aid.

In her captaincy year she wanted to raise awareness of hearing loss and the support available through the charity while helping to raise valuable funds to support others.

The ladies section at St Pierre organised many different fundraising opportunities including holding raffles, fundraising balls, collecting money in their golf shop and café and by having a 'penalty' fundraising bucket at the Captain's Bunker on the golf course.

One dare-devil club member, 86-year-old Joyce Hoare, even took part in a zip-wire challenge, raising more than £800 herself.

Lady Captain, Jenny Cook said: "Due to my own experiences with hearing loss, it seemed logical to support Action on Hearing Loss Cymru during my captaincy year.

"Once I started talking to club members about my own hearing loss it soon became clear that many others had also experienced hearing loss themselves, yet perhaps had never had any support.

"It was fantastic to be able to raise awareness around the help and information available from the charity while also raising money for a very good cause at the same time.

"I have been involved in a lot of charity work in the past and I have really enjoyed all of our fundraising activities over the last year. I am delighted that we managed to raise so much money."

Danielle Spiteri, fundraising executive for Action on Hearing Loss Cymru, said: "We would like to thank everyone at St. Pierre Marriott Hotel & Country Club and especially the ladies section for supporting us over the last year.

"As a charity, we really rely on donations from the public. The money raised will enable us to continue to support those with hearing loss and tinnitus at a local level through our information and support services as well as contributing to our bio-medical research around looking for cures."

There are many ways in which individuals, clubs and organisations can help support Action on Hearing Loss Cymru from taking part in sporting challenges to organising fundraising events of their own.
