Two worthy charities benefited from the proceeds of a fabulous Captains' Charity Day at The Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club on Friday 12th October, organised by men's and ladies' captains Dick and Jo Bull.
Ty Hafan, based at Sully in South Wales, offers comfort, care and support for life-limited children and young people with various conditions, such as Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Cystic Fibrosis and Cerebral Palsy, while fly2help, based at Cotswolds Airport in Gloucestershire, supports families and individuals facing a wide range of trauma or tragedy by giving the opportunity to experience the liberation and freedom of flight to develop imagination and stretch personal boundaries.
Twenty-two teams competed for a wide range of prizes on a near perfect day for golf. The ladies prize went to Jo Bull and her team, with Jo also picking up the 'nearest the pin prize' on the difficult 13th hole – just reward for her behind-the-scenes efforts in ensuring such a great day.
Father figure Trevor Curphey and the veteran brothers Alan and Neil Muir were aided by the presence of promising young golfer and Club Champion Jeff Hall as part of their winning team.
Jeff not only contributed some deft soft-hand touches around the green but also brought down the average age of the team to below 60.
Pipped into second place by one point were Geoff Walsh and his team of Danny Gear, Pete Neilens and Richard Kimp, specially brought in from Ross-on-Wye Golf Club, whose light hearted approach to the event summed up the bonhomie of the day.
Gear's 377-yard drive at the 12th hole split the fairway to earn him the prize for the longest drive and with Neilens picking up nearest the pin with his three-wood shot to fourth hole, it was rich pickings for the Herefordshire four.
Club Championship finalist Lyndon Richards and his team of Gareth Roberts, Mike Kenney and David Neal romped home in third place.
After gathering in the magnificent lounge of the mansion house for post match drinks and endless stories of missed putts and lost balls, the teams were treated to a three-course meal followed by the very entertaining and informative after dinner guest speaker, Welshman Nigel Owens.
Owens is a current international rugby and Heineken Cup referee and was the only Welsh referee at the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France, as well as the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.
His candid and humorous tales of life at the top of his profession were topped by a solo rendition of the Welsh classic Myfanwy, which brought a standing ovation from the packed audience.
The evening was rounded off by an auction of generously donated items, ranging from original paintings and first edition prints to tickets for sporting events, which were expertly dispatched by the gavel of David Spear for sums far greater than the captains could have hoped for.
The provisional total raised for the charities is around £7,000. Dick and Jo thanked all who had taken time out of their busy schedules to contribute to the day, which has given a much-needed boost to Ty Hafan and fly2help.
