MONMOUTH Bowls Club held a successful club finals weekend at their Sports Ground green.

The weather was kind with warm, dry conditions despite some overnight rain.

Saturday started with the Open Pairs and Nick Tyler and Haydn Holder facing Diana Davies and Frank Derbyshire.

Tyler and Holder managed to “find the green” a little quicker and having established an early lead, played a strong tactical game to prevent high scores that could have swung the momentum and secured victory 18-9.

Later in the afternoon, Tyler and Holder faced each other in the Handicap Singles Final while the Novice Singles Final saw previous finalist, Dennis Prince, against new faces, Phil Gibbs.

Gibbs has been a valuable team member, playing in the Lead position, and continued that consistency to win well.

In the Handicap Final, Tyler started with a four-shot advantage, but that was soon set aside as more experienced singles player Holder showed accuracy he could not match.

On Sunday, play started at 10am with Nick Tyler and Diana Davies facing each other again in the 2wood Singles.

Davies took the first two ends but, from then on it was Tyler all the way, only conceding one more shot on the way to the 21 required.

Tyler then faced his friend Kim Voss in the Roger Bywater Trophy, which he edged 21-19 after a thrilling match.

Meanwhile, Jeff Parker was facing Holder in the 3wood, Paul Trueman Trophy.

Holder dominated and was thrilled to win the trophy for the first time, as it was Paul Trueman who encouraged him to take up bowls nine years ago.

However, as Parker and Holder faced off again in the Gents Championship Final, it was Parker who mastered the new rink and romped to victory.

One final remained, Diana Davies facing Tommy Need in the BW Shaw Trophy.

Need dominated and was the worthy winner of the trophy dedicated to Bernard Shaw, who was one of Monmouth’s favourite window cleaners.
