The annual Rolls of Monmouth Awards Dinner took place in the magnificent festively bedecked orangery in the mansion house on Saturday 1st December.

This black tie event is the highlight of the busy social calendar at The Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club and it attracted a large number of revellers – competition winners, partners and also rans, who enjoyed a first class evening.

The superb banquet, brilliantly orchestrated by long serving Herefordian steward, Stuart Aimes, was punctuated by the award of an array of cups and medals, reminiscent of the trophy cabinet at FC Barcelona, to the year's successful golfers.

Captains Dick and Jo Bull hosted the evening, with Dick acting as compare. Englishman Bull took full advantage of the glum Welsh members present by reminding them of the England victory that afternoon over the All Blacks.

Promising young golfer Jeff Hall graciously accepted the men's singles champion's cup and gave a thank you speech to remember.

He also enlightened the enraptured audience with a brief introduction to the soft hand technique he has employed with such devastating effect on the golf course this year.

Ladies champion for yet another year, Ruth Light, eloquently thanked her captain, Jo Bull, for her sterling work in ensuring a successful year in the face of extremely difficult circumstances, not least the amount of rain that has fallen on the golf course in 2012.

The evening culminated in dancing, which may not have passed much muster with the judges of 'Strictly' but at least was not embarrassedly witnessed by any of the participants' children.

Friday 30th November saw the men's 'Home Away Day' take place, comprising an 18-hole stableford competition followed by a hearty meal prepared by The Rolls catering staff.

Not to be outdone by his ladies champion wife Ruth, Byron Light scored a magnificent 43 points to win by a clear three points from last week's winner Ian Stitt, who unlike his beloved Newcastle United, has hit a rich vein of form of late.

Light, who was in third place a week ago, finished with a birdie two at the notoriously difficult par three 18th and later reminisced of the similarities with other highs he has experienced in his glittering sporting career to a now empty clubhouse bar.
