“At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.” An incredibly powerful phrase which perfectly captures the spirit of reflection and remembrance.

Being the Member of the Senedd for Monmouth comes with the incredible honour of participating in remembrance services across the county.

This year, I had the privilege of joining commemorations in Usk and Portskewett, where I laid a wreath in tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

This is just a small token of remembrance, but moments like these grow ever more vital each year as far too often we run the risk of taking the sacrifice of our nation’s heroes for granted.

The simple act of a nation pausing in reflection together gives us all the time to listen and appreciate the freedom we enjoy and, too often, take for granted.

Remembrance Day is now an integral part of Welsh life, reflected in local traditions, services, and events that unite our communities. These occasions not only strengthen our sense of unity but also deepen our appreciation of the sacrifices made for peace and freedom.

Sadly, our veterans today face far too many issues when leaving the armed forces with homelessness and isolation far too often haunting our brave men and women.

It is simply unacceptable that any veteran should face such hardship after giving so much in service to Wales and the UK.

Many who leave the armed forces do so carrying complex physical and mental injuries, a reflection of the immense toll that comes with service to one’s country.

The very least we can do is ensure that they have the practical support they require when they return.

Last week, the Welsh Conservatives brought forward a debate calling on the Welsh Government to put in practical steps to end veteran homelessness by requiring all local authorities and social landlords to give homeless veterans a top priority when allocating housing.

We must also see more support in our NHS given to veterans and a greater understanding of the complex issues they face.

Finally, we must see the Welsh Government promoting the engagement in the armed forces friendly schools programme to the children of servicemen and women.

We as a nation owe so much to our brave men and women and we must never take this for granted. We must do everything we can to ensure that these veterans get the support that they all deserve.
