A Monmouth drama group has been given a lifeline following a devastating fire at their premises last month.

The Savoy Youth Theatre lost over two thirds of their ‘irreplaceable’ costumes in a fire that ravaged their headquarters last month.

Fire fighters were called at 4am to a fire at the White Swan Court which was the home of the group run by Sam Densham. Many of the costumes stored there suffered fire and smoke damage.

Timpsons, the dry cleaners, offered to wash all of the clothes for free, but despite the community rallying around the youngsters, around £11k worth of costumes and office equipment was lost.

The cause of the fire is believed to be a faulty immersion heater.

A donation of £5k from Shane Wallace, a director with Nelson Honey, was handed over last week to the group.

Shane said that his daughter had joined the group some years ago and benefitted so much from the sessions that he felt compelled to “give something back”.

The youth theatre are holding a fundraiser on 22nd July, showcasing their talents to raise money following the devastating fire.

Hosted for free by the Savoy Theatre, tickets are Adults £10, conc £8. It all kicks off at 7pm.
