Residents on Drybridge Street woke on Sunday morning, 1st September, to find their cars victims of a senseless act of vandalism.

Sometime overnight, the tyres of six cars were targeted by a person or persons with a sharp knife and eight tyres had been slashed and rendered useless.Resident Hannah Groome was first alerted to a possible vandal attack after a comment was made on social media from someone who saw "two very drunk screaming girls" attack a van in Drybridge Street at about 12.30am and kick the door and punch the wing mirror. From her bedroom window, Mrs Groome could see little evidence of any vandalism, but on closer inspection, it emerged that her tyre had been slashed. One of the residents, Claire Macdonald said it was most upsetting to find this had been done to not one, but six cars.“The cost of a new tyre will wipe out a whole day’s work for me as well as having to put up with the inconvenience of having to get it fixed” she told the Beacon.Another resident, Emma Drabble, could not go to work that morning as the tyre on her car was also cut, leaving her stranded until the tyre could be changed.“The worrying thing is that who needs to carry a knife that sharp?“It winds me up how it’s not taken seriously [by the police], it does affect individual lives. All these people have livelihoods, everybody’s car is everybody’s livelihood,” she added. One of the car owners was on holiday and unaware of the damage done to both her tyres.Another resident said she was only made aware of the damage to her tyre when she drove off. The only CCTV camera in the street is outside the Jewel Balti, but is pointing down to the front door.Hannah Groom had called Paul Jarrold Tyres with everyone’s tyre sizes and within 45 minutes, one of their fitters was on site and had started to change the eight ruined tyres. All of the residents had nothing but praise for the company who charged just one call out fee between all six car ownersA spokesman for Gwent Police said: We were called to a report of criminal damage on Drybridge Street, Monmouth at approximately 12.15pm on Sunday 1st September.
