A group of low paid women staff at Haberdashers' Monmouth Schools are celebrating after taking on the might of the private school establishment to win a 10 year fight for equal pension rights.

Each of the 27 claimants, all current or former house parents, administrators, assistant matrons, cooks or cleaners, at Haberdashers' Monmouth School will receive between £1,500 and £17,000 from the school.

The claim was settled just days before a tribunal hearing.

The women's battle for equal pay with their fellow male workers was exclusively revealed by The Beacon in June, 2007.

Claiming the school had discriminated against them because of their sex, in breach of Equal Pay and Sex Discrimination legislation, the women were supported by their union, UNISON.

They decided to make their case public after allegedly being frustrated by the school's delaying tactics and the arguments of their legal team.
