MEMBER of the Senedd for sir Fynwy Torfaen, Peter Fox, has called on the Welsh Government to provide financial support to those impacted by the wildfire near Blaenavon.

A recent fire seen at Mynydd Garn Clochty, Blaenavon, has been burning for over two weeks, and has to date destroyed around 250 hectares of vegetation and peat, much of which will never recover.

The impact on communities, farming and wildfire is profound and will be felt for years to come.

Mr Fox has met with the Blaenavon World Heritage Site Commons Management Group together with representatives of the commoners and graziers to listen to their harrowing experiencing, concerns, and hopes to move forward.

The MS has written to the Cabinet Secretary for Rural Resilience and Sustainability to relay the issues and concerns faced by so many as a result of this wildfire, and to call for specific support.

In his letter, Peter Fox, emphasised that those impacted by the fires face very real issues, including how livestock will be fed now, and in the future, in addition to the vast damage caused by the fire and the firebreaks themselves.

In closing, Mr Fox called on the Welsh Government to put in place financial support to help those affected by this fire.

Local MS for sir Fynwy Torfaen, Peter Fox, said: “This fire has been absolutely devastating for the local community and farmers, and my heart goes out to everyone affected.

“Listening to the real-world impact and stories about the wildfire was truly harrowing, and it is clear that targeted financial support is now required.

“Graziers don’t know how they will feed their livestock, not just now, but in the future, and the damage caused by the fire and even the attempts to stop it is huge and will cost so much to attempt fix.

“The Welsh Government must provide financial support to those impacted as soon as possible.”
