REFORM UK has called on the Welsh Government to tackle the “shameful neglect” of Caerwent’s Roman remains, with Laura Anne Jones MS demanding answers over their condition and inviting the Trefnydd to visit concerned residents.
Speaking in the Senedd, Reform UK’s Deputy Leader said:
“The remains themselves are hugely impressive and one of the most significant structures in Europe, dating back nearly 2000 years. That makes their current condition all the more disgraceful.”
The local MS added:
“What should be a source of national pride is being swallowed by weeds. Nearly 2000 years of history, left to deteriorate on successive Government’s watch.”
Challenging the requirement for ministerial permission before an urgent meeting with CADW, she said:
“I requested an urgent meeting with CADW about their condition, only to be told they would have to ask YOU first. Is that normal?”
Ms Jones also requested a statement on the upkeep of historic sites across Wales and invited the Trefnydd to Caerwent to meet constituents and see the condition of the remains firsthand.
