May I thank Maureen Stephens for her letter of appreciation of the efforts of the ‘senior citizens’ that she saw picking up litter on Bank Holiday Sunday (Surprise at seeing litter pickers, Beacon letters 4th September). A similar litter pick takes place every four weeks in central Monmouth and anyone of any age is very welcome to join us.

This is organised by the Monmouth Litter Group, which is made up of local councillors, MCC staff and volunteers who meet regularly to discuss keeping Monmouth tidy and looking its best for both residents and visitors. May we in turn pass on our thanks to those individuals who pick up litter on their own roads, in our green spaces, at the skate board park or around where they work.

We can certainly do more. Whilst some people drop litter, many just ignore its presence and only a few actively pick things up. If this concerns you please get in touch with me on [email protected] or on 01600 715427 to offer your help.
