SIR,
With reference to your article 'Wartime memories' (Beacon 9th February), I thought you may like to read this information.
In July 1918, Monmouth was decorated to receive a visit from a tank. It paraded around the town as part of the War Savings Campaign.
It was hoped that Monmouth would raise at least £20,000, but by 3.45pm, it had raised £54,000.
The Mayor, Councillor W Sambrook appealed to the people of Monmouth to give generously by subscribing to War Bonds and War Certificates.
In his letter to the Beacon, the Mayor said that his aim was to get a tank and an aeroplane "named after the dear old Town".
