A Commemorative Walk on Sunday (2nd November), re-traced the route to Troy Station taken by the soldiers of the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers (Militia) (RMonRE) as they marched off to war in August 1914.
The tribute was organised by Monmouth Walkers Are Welcome and was led by the Royal British Legion standard, carried by Caroline Bright.
Marchers included the mayor of Monmouth, Jane Gunter, and Monmouthshire County Council's chairman, John Prosser.
Also present were soldiers from today's RMonRE.
The reception at Troy Way, the site of the former railway station was moving as many residents had hung bunting across the hedges and received the walkers with rapturous applause.
The song 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary' was sung and Brian Ramsey, chairman of Monmouth Walkers Are Welcome, paid tribute to all those who had helped to make the event a fitting tribute to the soldiers that left the town 100 years ago, many never to return; most of the deaths occurring in the last month of the war.
The group then walked over to the area where the collecting yard was, and, following prayers by the RMonRE padre Leigh Richardson, the Last Post was played by Usk resident Ceri Edmunds, who had travelled to Monmouth especially for the event.
A First World War enthusiast, Steve Trew, added an air of realism to the event as he was dressed in a replica battledress of the time.
