The Dovecote and Templar Church Tower at Garway have become well known from a recent television drama series. Loosely based on archaeology, Bonekickers was filmed at this ancient site which is not normally open to the public.
Now Ross Civic Society has selected this place of great interest for their Heritage Open Day. It will be open, free, to all visitors on Sunday, September 14th, 2.30 to 5pm by kind permission of Mr Gwilliam.
Many people have never seen the inside of an ancient Dovecote and this one, built in 1326 by Brother Richard, is particularly fine and not to be missed. Garway church has a sturdy defensive tower and the archaeological evidence of the original circular nave, inspired by the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, will be explained on the guided tour. The soldier-monks farmed here to raise money for their campaigns to safeguard the Holy Land and Christian pilgrims.
Parking will be on a grass area, unless very wet.
