THE funeral procession of motoring enthusiast, Robert Bird, was held last Wednesday (1st April).
The Monmouth man died two weeks previously, at the age of 52.
He was a keen member of the Hereford Austin 7s Club, and as a mark of respect his coffin was followed across Monmouth by a procession of club members. As a touching detail, even Mr Bird's own vehicle joined the convoy.
Club member Michael Harcourt said: "Rob Bird was known to a lot of people and loved by many. The Church of St Thomas the Martyr was absolutely packed with friends and family paying their respects to Rob. He was a family man, local builder, car enthusiast, and Austin 7 Owner.
For this reason, Hereford Austin 7 Club wished to show their affection for one of their most popular members. We turned out in force for this saddest of occasions.
One of Rob's best friends, Derek Choppen, chairman of the Hereford Austin 7 Club said: "I met Rob at the New Year's Day VSCC meeting at The Royal Oak on the 1st January 2009.
"We struck it off, both interested in coaches, buses, lorries and I could go on. Either way I wish I had known him longer. He enriched my life in so many ways, his courage and determination would put many to shame.
"Rob had suffered an accident which subsequently had caused a stroke, this did not stop him. With his impaired mobility put to one side, he would get on and do whatever. The only two things I can think of that he would not tackle were 'electrics' and the 'waste pump' on his shower! They fell on me to do. I am, as many are, struggling to come to terms with the loss of 'Birdie'. I loved him for his straight talking, his humour, his love for his family and friends, loyalty and indeed honesty.
"Rob is survived by his wife Liz and children, Carrie, Robert, Ashleigh and Charlotte. He will be much missed by very many people."
