SINCE bus services in rural areas began to deteriorate, the bus shelter at Tregaer, like many others in the county, has fallen into disrepair and become very overgrown.
The Tregaer Village Hall Committee decided to take the initiative and undertake a ‘clean up’ a few weeks ago.
Unsure of who had ownership of the shelters, they approached the community council and asked if they could cut the ivy back.
With no objection, the hall committee supported by County Councillor Richard John and Community Councillors Bryan Grove and other members met one Saturday morning and set to the onerous task of slowly cutting all the ivy off the bus shelter.
Committee member Cathy Godfrey said that it only took them about one and a half hours but it has revealed the fascia board has rotted and the first line of tiles has dropped: “The shelter is on a walking route and we felt it was a shame that it could not be used as a resting place to have a cup of coffee.”
They still need to complete some repairs to the roof tiles but the group feels there is overall a great improvement and plan to paint the inside of the shelter with some emulsion paint and varnish the bench.
