A FIRE has burnt a hole though a section of play equipment in Rockfield Park resulting in its removal.

The fire started on Friday, 14th July melting the bottom of an elevated tunnel. The tunnel was quickly removed by Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) and the gaps in the play equipment boarded up.

The damage to the play equipment comes on the eve of the summer holidays and is a blow to the community.

Monmouth Town Councillor Alice Legg had recently set up a Facebook group called ‘Friends of Rockfield Park’ to involve the community in the upkeep of the park and was disappointed to hear what happened.

“I was saddened to hear about the fire, it is a real worry for all of us. It’s not just the damage it’s also the risk of someone getting hurt. We are very disappointed.”

The group is aiming to bring the community together and improve the park so an incident like this puts the cause back and has an effect on the community.

Cllr Legg said: “Friends of Rockfield park is a new group, we are trying to work with the community looking after the park, adding new things and fundraising. The park is a central point of the community, people love to meet at the park and it’s a great space.”

Fortunately for the children hoping to use the equipment these holidays, a replacement is on the way.

A MCC spokesperson said: “Our staff took swift action to cordon off the area to make it safe and to remove the damaged piece of kit. A replacement part has been ordered and this will be fitted as soon as it is received.

“Vandalism to children’s play areas on this scale in Monmouthshire is not a regular occurrence and we inspect all of the Council’s play areas weekly together with carrying out any repairs.”

News will hopefully be better for the the Rockfield Community Centre next door.

The current management have arranged a meeting for the 2nd August at 2pm for all interested parties that would be willing to take over the running of the hall to avoid possible closure.

Terry Christopher, a member of the centre’s management committee, said it would be “heartbreaking” if it was forced to close.

He added that the management committee of Rockfield Estate Community Centre is, “very regretfully, having to make plans to retire from their role”. Personal circumstances have gradually changed, meaning they need to pass on their responsibilities.

“Legally, a year’s notice to terminate the lease has to be given. This will have to be done by 15th July, 2018.

“The heartbreaking consequence is that, if no one is forthcoming to help manage the centre, it will be forced to close next summer,” he said.

The meeting is open to all members of the public.
