SIR,

I feel I must write to you yet again, this time in reply to George Weston and his accusation that I am guilty of making assumptions in a previous letter, concerning the county of Monmouthshire.

It seems that Mr Weston believes that geographical history only began 17 years ago, and because the powers that be decide to change the name of a place, it alters where you were born.

Before it was called Gwent or anything else, the towns I mentioned were in Monmouthshire, I know this because I was born in one of them myself, and it says so on my birth certificate.

I was referring to people like me, Mr Weston, not those born since the changes, even so, I am sure that they along with the majority of people born in the four Monmouthshire towns you mentioned, would also consider themselves Welsh.

Furthermore, just to add more fuel to the debate, when I  Googled the name Blaenau Gwent, I was informed that it was a 'borough council in the county of Monmouthshire', or did I "assume" this as well.

In reply to the anonymous person who wrote to you with great authority, and inside knowledge, concerning the cost to the NHS of printing in Welsh, whoever you are, like you, I do not know the figures, but it must be a drop in the ocean when compared with other pet projects of the Welsh Assembly, like for instance, free prescriptions and hospital parking for everyone regardless of circumstances, not to mention all the waste that takes place.

Does this spending meet the common sense criteria that our mystery writer seeks?

P Young
