County Councillor Fay Bromfield and Councillor Sean Jones have raised serious safety concerns about a dangerous stretch of Usk Road near the junction with Tre-Herbert Road, where a severely damaged safety barrier has remained in place for some time.
The barrier, located on a sharp bend, has been almost completely flattened and the area is poorly lit, creating what local councillors describe as a significant hazard for drivers, motorcyclists and pedestrians.
Residents have reported that vehicles, including cars and motorbikes, have previously gone over the collapsed barrier, highlighting the seriousness of the issue and the potential risk of further accidents if urgent action is not taken.
Councillor Fay Bromfield said: "This is a very dangerous bend and the safety barrier has been badly damaged for far too long. With no proper lighting in the area, it creates a real hazard for motorists and motorcyclists, especially at night. Local residents have raised concerns repeatedly, and it is clear this should have been treated as a safety priority much sooner."
Councillor Sean Jones added: "We know that vehicles have already gone over the barrier in the past, which shows just how serious this situation is. We welcome the recent installation of orange plastic safety fencing and reflective posts to highlight the danger, as it recognises that there is a problem here. However, this must only be a temporary measure while a proper, permanent repair is carried out as quickly as possible."
The councillors say they will continue to press for urgent repairs to the barrier and improvements to lighting at the site to ensure the safety of road users and local residents.
Fay is a Welsh Conservative Party County Councillor for the Llangybi Fawr Ward and Sean is Community Councillor for the same ward
