Residents from Itton and the surrounding area gathered in impressive numbers for a public meeting to discuss proposals to remove the centre white lines through Itton as part of a road safety initiative aimed at reducing vehicle speeds.

The well-attended meeting, with 38 residents present, reflected the strength of local feeling about speeding traffic through the village. Community Councillor Andy Williams, Cllr Rachel Buckler and Monmouthshire County Council Highways presented detailed evidence from similar schemes elsewhere, explaining how removing centre lines can encourage motorists to slow down and drive more cautiously. Residents were invited to consider the evidence before voting for their preferred option.

County Councillor Rachel Buckler welcomed the positive engagement from the community.

"There are long-standing problems with speeding vehicles and residents have great concerns for the safety of everyone living in the village, with particular worry for children, who naturally have less awareness. This is a continuation of positive measures already in place to help alleviate this problem." she said.

"There has been excellent engagement, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. However, it is important to recognise that some residents remain cautious about this measure, and it was right that everyone had the opportunity to ask questions and express their views before a decision was made."

Devauden Community Council Chair, Hannah Turner, thanked everyone involved in organising the event.

"It was a brilliant turn out, highlighting just how important this issue is for local residents. We would like to thank Cllr Rachel Buckler and Monmouthshire County Council Highways for engaging so openly with the community."

Following the presentation and discussion, an overwhelming majority of those present voted in favour of the proposal.

Community Councillor Andy Williams said: "The level of support was extremely encouraging, and we now look forward to seeing the work carried out over the next few weeks."
