SIR,
It has been said that "one crowded hour of glorious life is worth an age without a name". How shallow – as if posing before a cluster of clicking cameras in celebration of a transient event, often of limited significance, were in any way comparable to a lifetime's worthwhile contribution.
David Jones's was a life spent assisting the development of young minds, extending their horizons and enchancing their lives, and could not have been more productive.
Perhaps we should not shed tears for this worthwhile life, but save them for other precious lives given and wasted. Not this one. No tears, then, but perhaps the warmth of an inward smile for a man who went the extra mile!
