Town pub in top six of national award scheme
A MONNOW street pub is a finalist in the ‘the Oscars of the Pub Industry’, the Great British Pub Awards 2022.
The Castle Bar and Grill in the centre of town has beaten numerous pub businesses throughout the UK to become one of six in the finals for Best Sustainable Pub.
The Great British Pub judges were impressed with their green credentials and simple everyday sustainability initiatives.
The next stages of the completion will include a mystery judge visit to the Monnow Street venue and an interview in front of a panel of judges before the finals in Manchester on October 4th.
Speaking about their national recognition, owners Carl Willett and Paul Cinderey were overjoyed at being recognised after only being open just over a year.
“We are very proud of the achievements of the team including highlighting our gift trees initiative to our guests where for only 99p they can off-set their carbon impact by purchasing a life changing fruit tree which positively impacts on the planet and the developing countries in which they are planted”.
Their guest have planted over 2,500 trees through their partnership with Sustainably Run Restaurants.
This programme of reforestation and tackles the reversal of desertification of parts of Tanzania guests can scan a QR code and actually visit their forest “whilst the gift tree initiative is a cornerstone to our sustainability, what we source and who from, refuse disposal and ingredients all form part of what we do on a daily basis to lower our impact on the environment”.
Carl and Paul explain that their fruit and vegetables are from local company Evans of Monmouth, the fish is from sustainable sources and their steaks and meat are from 30 mins away at their Butchers’ farm in Usk.
“To be sustainable is about what we do and how we do it and what we can change to make a difference to our planet”, they added.
The Castle Inn 23 Monnow Street Monmouth specialise in local steaks and grills, using meat from the Usk and Wye Valley.
They open daily serving freshly cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner alongside a good selection of wines, beers and spirits.
