THE County's top policeman has given a promise that no decision has been taken to close any of the area's police stations.

Suggestions that stations were to close were "speculative and misleading" said the Chief Constable, Mr Mick Giannasi.

In a letter to Mr Gary Witcombe, branch chairman of the UK Independence Party, the Chief Constable said:

"The Police Authority has not, at this stage, made any decision to close any police station, nor has the Chief Constable asked the authority to consider doing so.

"That is not to say that, in due course, we may not be faced with some difficult and perhaps unpalatable decisions, but, for the time being, that point has not yet arrived".
