Residents and local businesses in Tintern were overjoyed to hear from Monmouthshire County Council that the road will be open later today.

Following the landslip at Tintern on 15th January an initial assessment of the slope has now been concluded. It has been decided to re-open the A466 at Tintern to single way traffic under traffic signal control. This will allow room to create a pedestrian walkway and a safety zone adjacent to the slope in case of any future minor falls. This arrangement will remain until further investigations by the Forestry Commission have been concluded. Further road closures are possible subject to continued inspections and prevailing weather conditions.

Council officers have worked around the clock to get the road open as quickly as possible, whilst also maintaining a high level of safety.

Local businessman Chris Rastall, who runs Abbey Mill centre, said "This is really excellent news. Local businesses in Tintern have suffered a great deal during the last fortnight. Now we can begin to get business back to normal."

The weekend has been forecast to be dry so businesses are hoping that visitors will once more visit Tintern to enjoy the beautiful scenery, country walks and various shops and restaurants in the village.

The long term plans for the work on the land slip is not certain at the moment with an assessment currently being carried out by the Forestry Commission.
