THE "Art-in-the-Cafe" at Brockweir and Hewelsfield Village Shop has scored another coup – an exhibition of landscapes by the Wye Valley artist Don Lavelle is on show from January 23rd for four weeks. In this exhibition of original paintings, Don captures the splendour and magnificence of The Wye Valley, our area of outstanding natural beauty. Visitors to this collection will be beguiled by Don's paintings of the local landscape and enjoy seeing his works depicting the charm of the old architecture of the surrounding towns and villages. His watercolours evoke the mood of the River Wye as it flows through the ever changing scenery of The Wye Valley - the drama as the river carves its way through deep gorges - the peace and tranquillity as it meanders through meadows on a summer day. Don lives in The Wye Valley and spends many hours painting and sketching in the area - absorbing the atmosphere - studying the natural changes of the scenes around him. He seeks out views that will captivate and enthral. He uses colour to bring out the splendour of this area of contrasts. His fine brushwork does justice to the details in nature. Don has a distinctive painting style. His assured use of light and shade gives both depth and an atmospheric quality to his work – he balances meticulous detail perfectly with areas of calm.
