MADAM,

100 years ago the First World War was raging. It had been a sad year, with much blood spilt for little gain and any prospect for success postponed until 1916.

The Battle of Loos and the failed venture known as Gallipoli alone cost countless lives and caused much anguish for the families who had lost their husbands and sons.

This year, Remembrance Sunday is on 8th November.

The poppy is the national symbol of remembrance and the way in which we individually remember those who have died in the service of their country in two World Wars, and in countless campaigns ever since.

“They died for us” is often said of them. Other themes such as: “The supreme sacrifice,” come readily to mind. We remember by wearing a poppy. The money we give helps the Royal British Legion whose task it is to provide care to those left behind, veterans of all ages with disabling wounds, and those in distress.

Please give generously as you buy your poppy and wear it with pride.
