Dear editor

In August 2024 I reported to MCC a sewage leak originating from under the market hall down through the slaughter houses and discharging a vast amount of extremely foul smelling liquid into the beautiful river Monnow below.

Upon contacting the council they insisted it was not their problem and forwarded the details for Welsh Water .

I immediately reported the issue to Welsh Water and they promised to investigate, indeed when passing I did see a Welsh Water van in attendance and thought the issue was due to be resolved. I stressed this was an urgent issue as there were people swimming in the river by the bridge using the sand bank as a beach with dogs also enjoying a cool down -all unaware of the vile pollution occurring less than 100 yards away even though there was a vile smell to the area.

To my absolute horror on September 1, I was out with my children when I once again walked the route behind the Iceland supermarket and could smell a vile odour .

Walking down the steps to the slaughterhouses I was flabbergasted to see the leak still spilling into the river with nothing but two sand bags and a metal fence having been applied to remedy the situation. For over a year 12 months raw sewage has been spilling into the river .

Immediately contacting Welsh Water they are denying liability and insist it is a council problem and MCC were supposed to be dealing with the issue.

The damage done to the beautiful river is obscene and even though it was reported a whole year ago it persists to this day.

I have reported the issue to Ofwat but am met with the usual line that they are so busy it will take a while for them to respond .
