SIR,

The Meningitis Trust team in South Wales has had a busy few days – and I'd just like to thank everybody who came along to our Family Day on Saturday and our fundraising Firewalk on Sunday.

Between them these two events sum up the two sides of the trust, supporting everybody affected by meningitis and enabling them to reach their potential, and raising money to enable this to happen.

With no government support we rely entirely on the generosity (and sometimes the bravery) of our supporters to raise the £8,000 we need each day to continue to offer our lifesaving services.

Our Family Day, held at Cardiff City Stadium, saw 40 people who have experienced meningitis join together, share experiences and have fun, with a packed programme of facepainting, balloon modelling, cheerleading and drumming workshops, creating a cool samba beat.

And thank you too to Mike and the crew from White Watch Cardiff Central Fire Station for bringing their fire engine along.

And on Sunday, 24 brave and eager participants put their best foot forward for our Firewalk in Caerphilly – what better way to prepare for Bonfire Night the following day.

But they took it all in their stride; the brave souls, and emerged triumphant at the far end. Thank you and well done to everybody who took part.

Although these were fun events meningitis is a serious issue. It strikes quickly and can kill in hours.

As we enter the peak period for the disease during the winter months we would urge everyone to make themselves aware of the signs and symptoms of the disease so they can look after themselves and their loved ones.

If you want to find out more about meningitis and the work of the Trust look out for us at St David's Centre on Saturday 24th November, when we'll be holding a bucket collection.

Or come along to our Cardiff Christmas Concert in Llandaff Cathedral on Tuesday 4th December.

But if you can't make either of these we're available 24 hours a day for you on our Freephone helpline on 0808 80 10 388.
