Monmouth Tennis Club held their Annual Awards Evening, combined with their Christmas celebration, on Sunday at Spice Royale in Monnow Street.
Jamal, of Spice Royale, has kindly offered sponsorship for Monmouth's tennis teams and in the new year the two ladies teams will be sporting new tops, paid for by the restaurant.
Sponsorship has also paid for the tennis balls used by the teams and Monmouth Tennis Club would like to thank Jamal for this very generous gift in support of local tennis.
Lesley Bruce, the club's chairman, made the presentations, ably assisted by Peter Harrie, vice chairman. Certificates were awarded to the ladies A team, for coming third in the Cymru Kitchen's Summer League. The runner's up trophy for the Minor Cup event was then awarded to team members, Carol Pell and Trish Allan, Barbara Blease and her partner Hilary Trenear. (This team have taken either first or second place in the Minor Cup for the last 3 years.).
Certificates were then presented to Peter Harrie for winning the American Tournament in the summer, and to Judith Oakley as runner up.
To recognise the hard work of the younger members, certificates were presented to Guy Erro-Castillo and to Jack Woodhouse as the most improved junior players.
Also in recognition of their efforts, most improved senior players were Heather Harrie, Petra Sikosova, James Hodge and Tom Dewhurst. These improvements are due in part to the coaching team, led by Rob Wedlake.
It has been a very good year for Monmouth Tennis Club. The courts have been extended from 4 to 6 and improved with new perimeter fencing. This has led to many new members joining, and a new, noticeable enthusiasm in the club.
