The developers of the proposed Mounton Road site in Chepstow, which could accommodate up to 230 new homes and a hotel, held a meeting on Tuesday to give the public more information about their proposals and listen to what councillors and residents have to say about the plans.
The meeting was held at the Cormielles Community Centre and had representatives from Taylor Wimpey and Turley Associates, who are the consultant planning advisors for the project.
A few members of the public expressed concern about the development.
"We don't want it." said Alan Braund who has lived in Chepstow for the last 28 years. "Chepstow needs more facilities, not people."
Kim Davies, a sister at a local doctor's surgery expressed doubts over wether the local health service and schools could cope with the sudden influx of 230 new families. " And they are using the Wye Valley name to promote the development whilst ruining the classic Wye Valley view. One day sheep - the next day boxes."
Mike Fenton, Strategic Planning Manager for Taylor Wimpey, said, "We have undertaken a large number of assessments during the development of our proposals and the scheme is designed to minimise any impacts on local infrastructure."
"If our idea goes ahead, part of our planning agreement with the local council will ensure the provision of any required improvements to local public services, such as schools."
"We feel that the inclusion of a hotel and restaurant, which has the potential for additional local investment, providing sustainable local jobs and attracting tourists to the area, will be a major benefit to the area. We feel that the site's mix of leisure facilities, family housing and its easily accessible location would prove to be a very positive addition to the Town of Chepstow."
Attendees were asked to fill in a questionaire, the results of which will be submitted with the planning applications in the required Statement of Community Consultation.
"We're really pleased to see local people taking an interest in our proposals and we will be using all feedback received to help shape our final plans. It is important for us to understand what the key issues are amongst local residents, and we will address these in our scheme where possible," said Mike Fenton.
