The swimming pool at Monmouth Leisure Centre may be knocked down to accommodate the building of a new comprehensive school – but will be replaced. Monmouthshire County Council is currently considering three options for the positioning of the new £40 million school. "One of those would involve relocating the current swimming pool to accommodate the new school providing a holistic, integrated approach to the whole site reorganisation," said a spokesman. "Were we to do this, we are clear that we would replace the swimming pool and the timing of that is to be explored within the overall programme of the school development." The three potential designs for the school can all be viewed at the Shire Hall. Option one would involve the main school building being built on stilts in an area of the school grounds which currently floods. The second option would see the swimming pool knocked down to make way for the school and a 'piazza' entrance, and rebuilt next to the existing leisure centre and car park. Option three is to rebuild the school in effectively its current position. "Although other local authorities are closing leisure centres, we have made a commitment to support ours," added the spokesman. "Were the pool to be replaced, we would continue to support swimming in the town while the new one is being built."
