MONMOUTH Town Council have created a Swifts of Monmouth Working Group after an informative presentation which was held by the People and Places committee from Swifts of Usk to help support the local knowledge about the Swifts in Monmouth.

The swifts of Usk are hosting a ‘Walk and Talk’ event on Thursday July 3 between 7pm and 9pm, and all ages are welcome.

There will be the talk at Bridges community Centre followed by a local walk.

Key features to look out for

Here is what to look out for if you are trying to spot a Swift:

  • Swifts are Dark brown however can they appear black against the sky
  • Small, pale patch on its throat
  • Long curved wings
  • They have a short, forked tail.
  • Can be spotted in groups wheeling over roofs and calling to each other
  • They are aerial birds, unlikely to land unless they are nesting

Swifts spend a lot of their time in other countries like Africa where there is a warmer climate, they breed across the UK but mainly in the south east spending only a few months in the UK to raise their chicks.
