SIR, It would appear that Monmouthshire County Council rushed plans for a new school in Monmouth to the cabinet last week in order to beat a deadline for a grant which was on offer for several schools in Monmouthshire. The public in Monmouth were presented with three optional plans for the new school in Monmouth but Monmouthshire County Council chose to push option two, the only option which would involve demolition of the swimming pool. The cabinet passed option two, and in so doing, gave permission for the council to demolish our swimming pool. It looks like Monmouthshire County Council sacrificed our swimming pool in order to secure the grant, on offer for the whole of Monmouthshire, which couldn't be rolled over. However, the cynic in me says that the county council pushed option two specifically to get the swimming pool demolished. That they kept their plans to push option 2 hidden from the towns people because they knew there would be strong opposition. Morally, the £5 million, which will be needed to rebuild the pool should come out of the £80 million being used to fund the schools. I believe that we will be told that the money will have to come from the Monmouthshire County Council budget. If this is the case, it will be all too easy for Monmouthshire County Council to say there are insufficient funds. By not providing the new pool, Monmouthshire council would save a lot of money. It wouldn't be the first time that the wool has been pulled over our eyes. If the council are sincere in their promise to build a new pool let us see it begun before the present pool is demolished. They should make the plans available to the public, just as they have done with the school, but my guess is that there are no plans. Helen Levy (Monmouth)
