MAGOR and Undy train station looks to be the first Burn station to be built after the Welsh Government confirmed the work will begin this year on five new stations in South East Wales as part of a major investment in Welsh railways.

The new stations are being funded through a start of £445 million UK Government investment in rail infrastructure across South Wales to start the project but these stations forms as part of a larger £14 billion promise to improve rail infrastructure.

The the work on five stations in Newport, Cardiff and Monmouthshire is expected to start this year.

MP for Monmouthshire, Catherine Fookes has raised this project in numerous speeches and meetings with the UK and Welsh Government when she has been asking for better transport in the local area.

“This is absolutely fantastic news for Magor and Undy. After years of campaigning and lobbying of both the UK and Welsh Government, we now have confirmation that Magor Walkway Station will be built quickly too.

“I want to thank the incredible local campaigners, including the Magor Rail Group and our local councillors whose tireless work has helped make this possible.”

The Magor Action Group on Rail have also been praised for their efforts in campaigning for a walkway station at Magor and Undy.

The group was started by a retired railway man Ted Hand when he founded the group in 2012. The group shared on their website in December last year stating that they were on their 14th year of campaigning.

“This station will open up new job opportunities, improve transport links, and help ease congestion on the M4 and surrounding roads. I will continue working closely with partners to ensure progress moves forward as quickly as possible,” added Ms Fookes.

Cllr Catrin Maby, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Environment, said: “This is such good news for Monmouthshire. Many years of work and campaigning has culminated in this announcement today.

“Not only that, we have now been promised that the new station for Magor and Undy will be front of the construction queue, with work promised to start this year.

The train station in Magor and Undy is being set out as one of the ways of reducing M4 congestion, whilst providing another travel route for residents in the local area.

Leader of Monmouthshire County Council, Mary Ann Brocklesby, said: “I am so pleased to receive this news. This new station has been a priority for my administration since we took office, and we have lobbied hard to reach this point.

“The real story and real heroes are a band of committed residents in Magor and Undy. They are living proof that if you believe in something, refuse to give up despite many obstacles and stay the course, good things happen.

“Congratulations to each of them and to everyone else, including local councillors, who have given so much time to this – it's a good day.”
