SIR,
I am writing to support the return of the market to Agincourt Square.
The officers of Monmouthshire County Council seem determined to deprive our historic town of its heart.
Towns which have done away with their central markets in the past have died from the centre out and are now having to reconsider how to bring life back into town.
The misguided notion that having an unused and sterile area outside the Shire Hall will add to its attraction, seems to have been accepted without question by the functionaries at County Hall.
How can they be allowed to do this to a town as ancient as Monmouth. What has happened to democracy?
One has only to read the letters pages of the Beacon over the last few weeks and months to assess the strength of support for this proposal.
Shoppers and shop-keepers alike demand the return of a food market to outside the Shire Hall.
A regular user of Monmouth for all my food and other shopping, I cannot believe that we can allow Agincourt Square to be deprived of its market and the town of its heritage.
