SPORT was the winner when Monmouth Cricket Club faced JD Wetherspoon's All Stars in a fun-packed Twenty20 fund-raising match at the Sports Ground.

A big crowd watched an entertaining affair which the cricket club won by four wickets despite a man-of-the-match display from Wetherspoon's Rich Hamon.

Monmouth club chairman Martin Newell thanked all those who supported the day and Wetherspoon's for providing superb raffle prizes.

Newell paid tribute to Wetherspoon's manager Chris Jenkins, from the King's Head, who helped to organise the inaugural game and bowled some fine deliveries.

He also gave a special mention to big-hearted couple Dean and Hannah Jordan who provided – and then cooked – all the food for free.

The match was a big hit and is expected to raise more than £1,000 for CLIC Sargent, a charity which provides care for children and young people with cancer and gives support to their families.

In the game itself, Hamon (32), Josh Grey (32), Fraser Kilgour (31) and Ollie Grey (30) starred as Wetherspoon's posted a respectable 156 for four from 20 overs.

Andy Bowley (two for eight) and ex-Welsh football international Steve Jenkins, the former Huddersfield and Swansea City defender, were among the wickets for Monmouth Chairman's XI.

In reply, Jonathan Roberts (32) and skipper Andrew Smith (30) got Monmouth's innings off to a good start before Bowley (19), Richard Shaw (19) and Paul Swingwood (14 not out) steered the hosts to the target in the 17th over.

All of Wetherspoon's bowlers showed promise, with Matt Ford (one for eight), Mark Jones (one for nine), Ollie Grey (one for 13) and Steve Jordan the pick of their attack.

Martin Newell is collecting money from the event, all of which is being given to CLIC Sargent. Anyone wanting to donate can call Newell on 07525 616987.
